In my art practice I continue to explore the multiplicity of shifting identities and environments that form the basis of contemporary society. Identity is always in a constant state of flux, traditionally thought of as being influenced by contexts, histories and memories, both collectively and individually.

This body of 28 digital images called Neo_mort continues this investigation into the space and place of human existence. Found in a junk shop in an old wooden box, this beautiful set of Victorian glass slides is unusual in that it focuses on statues and flowers as though a single corporeal body.

If the images were scanned as transparencies only the statues would have been seen; if as reflective objects as I have done, then other worlds appear – interiors of buildings with statues, text, and crystalline features informing and deforming identities frozen in marble. The camera images a time-freeze not once but twice. Once at the time of the images construction, then reanimated and frozen again through the light of the scanner.

In a post-modern world these frozen images may represent a reflection on our memories, histories and interactions that are becoming released from the historical contexts on which they are traditionally based – the referent silently split from it’s once powerful reality.
